I regularly do an ask me a question on Instagram (thank you to those who take part as I get asked some great questions) and a recurring one I get is from people saying they lose balance when they kick, they want to know why this is happening and if they can stop it. Now, there are a number of reasons as to why this could happen such as leaning too far back, pulling your shoulder out of the kick, standing too close to the target etc, etc. (I’d have to see the kick to fully understand why they’re losing balance). However, I’ve decided to put a video up highlighting a common mistake I see beginners make when kicking the bag (or pads for that matter). It’s extremely important that you position yourself so that the bag is in between your hips. Your hips should be facing facing the target at all times when you’re in your conventional stance (just before I get any other style practitioner tell me about a bladed stance 😂 remember the Muay Thai stance has quite square). This will help with making sure your full bodyweight is being thrown in to the kick and that you’re not throwing yourself off balance by trying to kick something off centred to you. The reason you position the target between your stance is because when you fight with someone, they’re going to be stood directly in front of you….not off centred.
