I have a suggestion for a natural dye. Have you ever heard of the south American herbal drink called mate? Pronounced Ma te. It's a dark rich green. I've never tried it but it would be beautiful.

Put the ax head vertically halfway in a bucket of sand. BURN out the middle with a torch and you will not lose your metal TEMPER !! A lot easier !!
