Instead of moving only clean intake air, the turbo is also pushing a visible mist of engine oil through the intake system. This typically happens when the turbocharger's internal shaft seals or bearing assembly fail, allowing pressurized engine oil to leak past the rotating shaft. The rapidly spinning compressor atomizes the oil into a fine mist, which is then carried downstream through the intercooler and toward the engine. A failed turbo seal can lead to excessive exhaust smoke, reduced performance, increased oil consumption, and contamination of the intake system. On diesel engines such as the Ford 6.0L Power Stroke, severe oil leakage can even contribute to an engine runaway if enough oil enters the cylinders and begins burning as fuel.
