By the time they returned home, Winter was practically asleep on Karina’s shoulder. After their baths and getting ready for bed, Winter shuffled into her bedroom in her fluffy bunny pajamas, hugging the pink plushie she’d won at Lotte World. Then she stopped. There was a HUGE box sitting on her bed. Winter stared at it. Slowly, she took a step backward. Behind her, Karina leaned against the doorway, hiding a smile. “Go on, baby. Open it.” Winter spun around so quickly her pigtails bounced. “No!” Karina raised an eyebrow. “No?” Winter hurried over and grabbed her arm, hiding behind her. “I don’t wanna! Scary!” Karina burst out laughing. “Oh, my God, Winter.” “YOU ALWAYS DO THE SCARY BOX THING!” “What scary box thing?” “Your friends! You say it’s just a present, and then it’s something SCARY!” Karina couldn’t even argue with that. She did have a reputation for giving her friends ridiculously terrifying surprises. But this time, she’d genuinely bought something nice. “Baby, I promise there’s nothing scary inside.” Winter shook her head vigorously. “No! You’ll trick me!” “I’m not tricking you.” “Promise?” “I promise.” Winter hesitated, looking between Karina and the suspiciously enormous box. Eventually, Karina scooped her up. “Come on, little scaredy-cat.” “Karinaaa!” Karina carried her to the bed and settled her in front of the box, kneeling beside her. “Open it with me?” Winter clung to her arm. “Together?” “Together.” With trembling fingers, Winter lifted the lid. For a moment, she simply stared. Then— “AAAAAAAAAH!” Karina nearly jumped. Inside was a limited-edition bunny plushie Winter had been desperately searching for over the past few months. And beneath it? The enormous, highly coveted Calico Critters collection containing one hundred characters. Winter’s mouth fell open. “THE BUNNY!” She grabbed the plushie, squeezing it against her face before immediately digging through the packaging. “THE BABIES! KARINA, LOOK! ONE HUNDRED! ONE HUNDRED BABIES!” Karina watched as her wife practically vibrated with excitement. Winter carefully lifted each little character, gasping over the tiny outfits, miniature accessories, and adorable families. “Look at this one! LOOK! SHE HAS A LITTLE BOW!” “I see, sweetheart.” “AND THIS ONE HAS A BABY!” Karina smiled. She’d never understood Winter’s obsession with tiny animal figurines. To her, they were just little toys. But watching Winter’s face light up made her realize something. It wasn’t really about the toys. It was about having something that made her happy. Something she could love without worrying that it would get annoyed with her for talking too much. Winter suddenly threw her arms around Karina’s neck. “Thank you! Thank you! You’re the best wife ever!” Karina froze for a second before hugging her back. “You’re welcome, baby.” Winter pulled away, clutching the bunny. “Can you play with me?” Karina glanced at the clock. Then at Winter’s hopeful face. “Yeah,” she said, settling beside her on the rug. “Show me your hundred babies.” Winter squealed and immediately began arranging the little characters. And Karina, who had spent months avoiding playing with her own wife, found herself sitting on the floor at nearly ten o’clock at night, learning the names of a hundred tiny woodland creatures. Honestly? She didn’t hate it. #karina #winter #karwin #peterpan #Love
