@mrcrim3: By the 1970s color photography was ubiquitous. 📸 @Ed Post However, it became popular in the 30s and widely used by the 50s and 60s. So, why in the world is this picture from 1986 during South African apartheid only available in black and white? Why are so many pictures we see from our leaders from the 60s and 70s in America also shown in black and white? ⚫️⚪️ Psychological manipulation. 🧠 Colors mean something, whether it’s being communicated through an advertisement or historical narrative. This makes you FEEL it was a long time ago even though it was only 38 years ago. Funny enough, I couldn’t find this pic in color online. 🤔 🚨 Have you ever considered this? This is called over thinking:; Life Magazine, one of the greatest mags published had awarding B&W stills for they invoked starkness and realness.

In 1987 my dad was an amateur photographer. It was so hard to get his black and white film developed, my dad set up his own dark room.

Newspapers were still printing in black and white, so photographers working for newspapers, used black and white film.

Artistic purposes aside, THIS has been exposed as a well known tactic used by govs/media to portray racism as a relic of the distant past. Weird to defend it. Possibly telling.

a lot are from new agencies, who's main photography was still in black and white because newspapers were in black and white.
However, we all saw network news in the 80s and SA Apartheid

Yeah they made all the South African historical history events in black and white to make us think it happened a long time ago like my mom lived through this and they expect us to forget and forgive?

colored photos Costed more to print......so black and white photos were just the cheaper option. it wasn't necessarily an agenda

The New York Times didn’t print in color until 1997. Washington post didn’t until 1999. Both did color front pages only, inside pages were b&w.

My parents were 20 in 1986 in Durban. I’ve only ever seen pics of them from that year in colour. To make this photo black and white was intentional but the reality is this man is probably only 60 now
