This party comes in the form of an event known as a whale fall, which is when a whale carcass sinks down into the black pitch of the deep, much to the joy of all the cheeky scavengers below. This sudden high concentration of nutrients is immediately set upon by a wide range of deep-sea creatures, like crabs, hagfish, sharks, and a slew of invertebrates. Nothing is wasted and the entire process of decomposition can take quite a bit, w/ bacteria & microbes still feeding off the bones years after the initial landing of the carcass. This type of dramatic and sudden influx of readily available nutrients is crucial, not only to deep bathypelagic ecosystems, but to the nutrient cycles that govern the wellbeing of every marine environment on our planet. #animals #ocean #deepsea #science
