@axeandroothomestead: Last season was my first truly trying to overwinter dahlia tubers. After a lot of reading, I decided on the following… and not one tuber rotted! I’m in central NJ, zone 7, and lifted mine from the ground in early November. 1. Wait for spring to split 2. Store in cardboard boxes 3. Use dry maple leaves as packing 4. Fold boxes to close, but don’t tape 5. I kept the boxes stacked in my unheated mudroom. This room is narrow with a large picture window and shares a wall with my dining room. I’m sharing this because I did not monitor humidity and this environment worked fine. 6. I opened the boxes just once in January to check nothing was rotting. Then closed again. 7. I just opened and planted my tubers these past few weeks! Advantages of dahlias in permaculture systems: 1. Tubers help to keep soil loose, improving drainage and tilth 2. Tubers are edible 3. Flowers attract pollinators 4. Great companions for tomatoes and peppers 🌼🌸🌺
