@thenewsmovement: Israel is not in Europe, so why is it in Eurovision? Various geographically non-European nations send singers to compete at the world's largest music contest. Israel made its Eurovision debut in 1973. It became eligible after becoming part of the European Broadcasting Union, which is behind the event. The EBU created a broadcasting area to ensure radio frequencies didn’t clash and that area included what was at the time the British mandate of Palestine. When modern Israel was founded in 1948 it fell within the broadcasting area. Today other members include Azerbaijan and Australia, who have joined the union. Outrage over the deaths of more than 34,000 people in Gaza has led to protests as 20-year-old Eden Golan performs at this year’s contest in Sweden.
