Here’s Molly, our Wild Food Lead, sharing knowledge about a classic foraged treat, blackberries (Rubus fruticosus agg.). These early autumn berries grace our hedgerows as the seasons turn slightly cooler, providing valuable nutrients, vitamins, and medicinal properties. Brambles have a fascinating place in folklore, too. Celtic mythology considered blackberries a favourite food of the faerie folk. On the Isle of Man, leaving the first blackberries of the season for the Fae was believed to ensure the rest of the harvest remained bountiful and free from bugs. British and Irish tradition states that when Lucifer was cast from Heaven on Michaelmas Day (29 September), he landed in a bramble. Angered by the thorns, he spoiled the berries, making them unfit to eat. People were warned never to pick, or eat blackberries after this date, as doing so was thought to invite bad luck and illness. This superstition did, however, help to keep people safe. By late autumn, cooler and wetter weather causes blackberries to rot and develop mould, making late-season berries inedible. 🌿💚
