Easier explanation: Lines of longitude (going north) converge and therefore a straight baseline is used to maintain squares. Then correction lines are used going lattitudinal (east/west).

reminds me of the fact that there is a curve before most major bridges in the US. Part of the plan to replace the bridge in the future without changing much of the existing road or flow of traffic
