@fascinatedbyfungi: Not sure when I’ll have a chance to post again, so here’s a quick guide to hunting burn morels in the Sierra Foothills. Morels are particularly elusive mushrooms that often hide in plain sight. Sometimes the best way to find them isn’t to actually look for morels - but to hunt the habitat. Look for area where moisture is collecting, near green plants, in drainage channels, under logs, in piles or sticks and debris. Once you’re in the right habitat, the morels will start showing themselves to you. It also pays to recognize other Ascomycete mushrooms that act as indicator species, like the orange peel and purple crown cup which fruit in similar areas and conditions.
