Virgil Abloh, a name we all know throughout the fashion world. His work has resonated with the world and his legacy is firmly set in stone amongst us all, especially the young aspiring designers of our generation. Virgil graduated with a masters in Architecture and it is said that a building designed on his college campus by architect Rem Koolhaas sparked his interest in fashion, as Rem Koolhaas himself actually worked on runway collections for Prada. After graduating Abloh interned at Fendi, he was in the same class as Kanye West in 2009. This internship was in Rome, Italy and this was where the two icons formed a collaborative relationship, and it was during this time that Abloh caught they eye of Louis Vuitton’s CEO, Michael Burke. Virgil was a creative through and through and started his first brand called Pyrex Vision, in 2012, where he purchased dead stock Ralph Lauren pieces, printed designs on them, and sold them at a premium. After much success 2013, was the year when he founded the beloved Off White brand. Off white was a high end street wear brand, and it needs no introduction. By 2021 Virgil Abloh’s innovation in design and fashion was needed at the pinnacle of fashion, and this was when he was appointed as artistic director of Louis Vuitton fashion house, under the LVMH luxury umbrella. Abloh’s story is remarkable, from printing T-shirts that were on sale, to being the founder of two companies, and then to be the first person of African descent to lead the Louis Vuitton brand, his successes and achievements can’t be put into words. Breaking the barriers of society and design alike, it is no wonder that Virgil Abloh is an inspiration to many around the world. November 28, 2021 was the tragic day Virgil Abloh passed away. From a rare type of Cancer which he kept private.
