“Fake” meats: I agree that some are healthier than others, but then he says “most of them are heavily processed” as if that’s what makes them unhealthy. The fact that something is processed doesn’t inherently make it unhealthy, and RCTs on these processed plant-based meats, suggest that they improve CVD risk factors compared to meat. And for what it’s worth, they tend to have pretty comparable protein digestibility scores to meat, not that it’s the most important metric. Processed meats: I agree we should limit processed meat intake for health. Protein bars: He says protein bars are one of the worst protein sources because he sees them at the gym and they’re heavily marketed. Nowhere did he provide any evidence of them being unhealthy or inferior sources of protein. This is a bizarre argument. They’re very convenient sources of protein. Snacks with added protein: What’s the problem with that? I wouldn’t suggest anyone centre their diet around high protein Mars bars, but if someone wanted to snack on something that is traditionally low in protein, but there was a high protein version, that could be a better option. Protein powder: Yes they’re ultra-processed… but that doesn’t mean they’re unhealthy, nor is there any good evidence of the emulsifiers/sweeteners being harmful. Of course, he doesn’t provide any data to support his claim. He just says people start consuming protein powders and at some point (either soon after or much later) develop digestive issues. First, it sounds like he’s basing this on anecdotes, and second, just because something happens first, doesn’t mean it caused what happens later (post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy). That’s what RCTs and prospective cohort studies are for. Oh, and protein powders can improve cardiovascular risk factors like LDL-C and blood pressure, so they sound pretty scary.
