Guān Yǔ, a famed military general from the late Eastern Han dynasty, is renowned for his loyalty and valor, considered among the strongest warriors of the Three Kingdoms period. From the Northern Song dynasty onwards, Guān Yǔ was posthumously honored by successive dynasties, venerated in Buddhism as a guardian deity, and in Taoism as the Divine Emperor Guan and the Great Emperor Who Subdues Demons. Commonly worshipped as the God of Wealth and Rain by the populace, he is respectfully referred to as "Guān Gōng" and has been esteemed as the "Saint of War" by rulers over the ages.
