You may have seen people on TikTok proudly showing off their so-called ‘septum arms’. But what are they? This latest TikTok trend has flooded users' ‘For You Pages’ recently, receiving mixed reactions online. According to Forbes, ‘septum arms’ refers to “the fleshy tricep area on the back of the arm above the elbow”, specifically “how it naturally widens when the arm relaxes against the side of the torso.” Crucially, Forbes points out that the phrase has been interpreted by many as an “unflattering description”, portraying arms that aren’t toned as undesirable. However, despite this description, the phrase doesn’t have any medical legitimacy, given that septums exist in the nose, not the bicep. So where did the term come from? The phrase seems to have originated with a harmless post from TikTok user Orlando Speciality, who shared a video criticizing people for making negative comments about women’s arms. Shaking his head at the comment, he captioned the post: “This world is full of sick people.” The video has now been viewed more than 16 million times and has already inspired multiple parodies, each garnering over a million views. However, even though the original appeared to have a body-positive message, users discussing septum piercings in the comment section mixed with the TikTok algorithm to create a new search term - ‘septum arms’ - with body-shaming being naturally associated. In the confusion, some users began posting videos showing off their so-called ‘septum arms’, with one even writing: “After finding out what ‘septum arms’ are, I’m no longer wearing this jacket today.” But while some attempted to ‘normalize’ ‘septum arms’ or open up about their insecurities, others didn’t take so kindly to the trend. Another user wrote: “If I see one more thing about septum arms just know that I’m coming for you.” But ‘septum arms’ are just the beginning. Another trend, known as ‘vuvuzela arms’, where the arm appears larger above the elbow than below, has also been making waves, sparking even more backlash. #septum #bodypositivity #trending #arms
