it's called progressive overload. If you don't want to get stronger just tell your trainer your new goals are to maintain, if they're any good they'll adjust for you.

Well, it all depends on what your goals are. If you actually pay a trainer to help you, you should have told them what these are and if you mentionned you wanted to get stronger or grow more muscles, they will try to push you to your limits, as this is usually an effective way for improvement. They also need to know what your limits are. If you purposely give up early, you're giving them false information, slowing down your progress and thereby throwing out your money and your time out the window. It'd be better to talk to your trainer, that you think it's going in a wrong direction, so you can reevaluate your goals together and give them the opportunity to switch the focus of your training, trying out other methods. Everyone is different and they won't know if you're on the right track of you don't give them the info they need

It’s all different mind sets, talk to your coach and see if they’re okay slowing down progress. The goal is always more weight, but it doesn’t need to be a race.
