it's because of the photography medium. They had to use massively long exposures to get such images. trust me, I am a photographer and history buff 👌

I read a lot of geneaology books with town histories etc. many people share old diaries or saved mail from ancestors well before the civil war. Those mention TONS of weird stuff. These are things 1/2

Shutter speeds on cameras back then took forever. People had to be still for an extended amount of time. Only stationary objects were picked up.
