A bunion, also known as hallux valgus, is a deformity of the big toe and first metatarsal where the big toe starts to migrate towards the second toe resulting in a bump on the medial side of the big toe joint. Causes can be both genetic and environmental (i.e. wearing heels or shoes with too narrow of a toe box). The problem with a deformity like this is that it not only looks suboptimal, but it also changes the biomechanics of the foot. The abductor hallucis muscle (that straightens the big toe) is now in a chronically lengthened position, meaning it no longer has a good mechanical advantage to stabilize the medial arch of the foot. The “foot tripod” is lost and it’s more difficult to balance on that foot. If you find that your toes are squished together or that big toe is starting to gravitate towards the second toe, pay attention to the alignment of your toes when you’re standing or doing exercises. The big toe twist is a great way to get the big toe in optimal alignment but can be challenging depending on the progression of a bunion. I also love using toe spacers when I’m doing any single leg balance work to let my toes splay and give me a wider base of support to balance upon. #triathlon #Running #bunions #feet #physicaltherapy #physio #injuryprevention #fyp
