Atherosclerosis is a big word, but it’s really a simple idea. It means that the arteries — the tubes that carry blood from the heart to the rest of the body — start to get clogged. Over time, fat, cholesterol, and other things in the blood stick to the inside walls of the arteries. This buildup is called “plaque.” At first, you don’t feel it. But as the plaque grows, the blood has less space to flow. It’s just like a water pipe that slowly fills with rust or dirt. One day, the pipe can get blocked, and water stops flowing. In the body, that blockage means trouble — less blood and oxygen reach the heart, brain, or legs. This can cause serious problems: chest pain (angina), heart attack, or stroke. In the legs, it can cause pain when walking or even wounds that don’t heal. Why does plaque build up? Smoking, eating too much fatty food, being overweight, not exercising, high blood pressure, and diabetes all play a part. Even family history matters. But the good news is: you can fight it. Eating healthier foods, more fruits and vegetables, cutting down on smoking and alcohol, staying active, and keeping blood pressure and sugar under control all help keep the “pipes” open. Doctors also have medicines and treatments that can lower cholesterol and prevent heart attacks. Think of it this way: your arteries are like irrigation pipes on the farm. If you keep them clean and clear, the fields get water. If they get clogged, the plants die. Your body works the same way — keep the flow strong, and you stay healthy. #medicine #hearthealth #cardiology #atherosclerosis #Science
