Check the plastic cam gear, probably jumped timing because a gear tooth sheared off

shared a flywheel pin. reset the points and condenser and yhe mag setting clear yhe flywheel magnets and the bottom of the magneto.

valves need adjusted maybe. when those ohv Briggs get old they need adjust about every other season.

Check the valves, flywheel key and compression. I would guess it’s a valve/ cam problem.

If that’s an aftermarket carb we see a lot of times the jetting is off. It may simply just be the wrong jet allowing too much fuel through

look at the blade for a whack mark. or if the blade is all new pull the flywheel. key is probably bent or sheared.

My father's 2009 MTD Craftsman 190cc B&S L-head mower is starting to do this, hard to start and down a bit on power. When it starts, sputters alot on cold start and finally gets going, but low on HPs.
