@bemusing: My conclusion is that unless you have the money to pay for a new car in full in cash up front, I'd rather spend my money in a car payment on something new than in car repairs. Which is so weird. I don't hardly know anyone who can just pull over $1,000 out of nowhere for a relatively minor repair. Am I missing something here? #mechanics #cars #carrepair #newcar #usedcar #inflation #costofliving
shops add all expenses, rent/ mortgage, bills, equipment, tech pay everything that it takes to keep shop open for a month and divide by hours open. that's your shop rate.

very normal shops do this because people bring cars in to get diag then leave the shop is out hours of time with no gain
good diag is not easy or cheap for the shop either

labor cost goes up but the mechanic pay stays the same. all mechanics leave the industry. not worth it. I left and I make triple what I did being a mechanic. and I love cars again.

Everything’s gone up and it’s cuz we lost a bunch of techs as dealerships killed the vibe and small shops r the best way to get the deal now a days

an industry that is continually evolving due to rapidly increasing advancements should be charging that much. the shop they work In is not free. the tools the use are not free. New cars make it worse.

Your $1,000 repair is a lot cheaper than a new car.

Mechanics aren’t making 300$ an hour, shops are becoming greedy. My labor rate is at the higher end of the industry, but it’s still less than 25% of the shops labor rate

diagnosis is not free. labor predetermined by labor guide.

300 an hour is crazy. All the shops I’ve worked with have highly experienced mechanics and it’s usually like 130-150 and hour.

Btw the diag does not get “soaked in the repairs” they just add another hour of labor quote.

It’s amazing how the mechanic is always ripping someone off. Yet car mechanic is the lowest paying trade. No one ever questions the plumber, electric, or carpenter 😳

Another thing to note is that the labor rate is paying not just the technician who is working on your car but three or four others that make sure your car repairs go smoothly and efficiently

No actual mechanic makes anywhere near what a shop charges. Diag charges have become standard. Dealers are more expensive than independent shops. Works hard tools are expensive.
