I highly recommend using wood conditioner before hand. It ensures the wood will be able to absorb the stain evenly.

Exactly why with our new pool deck we went with trex. Only bad part is it gets really really hot..

I feel your pain! We had the same issues with our back deck. We switched to composite and despite the cost, it was worth every single penny!! No more time wasted on sanding and staining/painting!
