Post-ChatGPT essays have richer vocabulary and more varied word choice. But at the sentence and document level, ideas converge. Essays are less conceptually distinct from each other than they used to be, and that effect is strongest among minority students. Most students likely aren't having AI write their essays — they're using it to edit and polish. And when AI edits, it goes lexically richer but smooths ideas towards what it knows - what it’s been trained on - what’s appeared before.
