For millions of years, the underwater world has been a battlefield of survival, and octopuses have perfected their defense game using a variety of inking techniques! 

1. 👁️ Visual Obstruction: The Smoke Bomb Trick 💣💨 When an octopus is scared, it releases a cloud of ink that looks like a smoke bomb. This dark cloud hides the octopus, making it hard for predators to see where it went.
 2. 😵 Chemical Deterrent: Octo-Pepper Spray 
Octo ink has chemicals that taste really bitter. DOPA & Dopamine are compounds found in the ink that can affect a predator’s ability to smell and taste properly, making it difficult for the predator to continue its attack or locate the octopus. This sensory disruption gives the octopus a better chance to escape! 

It’s almost like if someone tried to eat a jellybean that looked tasty but turned out to taste like rotten eggs. (Do you remember those?) They’d spit it out and wouldn’t want to try one for a while. 

The fish looks like it’s thinking “Yuck! That’s NOT the snack I wanted!”
 3. Mimicry and Confusion: The Decoy 🕳️🐙💨 Sometimes, the ink forms shapes that look like other sea creatures or weird objects. This confuses the predator, who might chase the ink instead of the octopus! 
You might think— okay, so it’s ink or no ink, right? 

Whelp, it turns out octopuses have the ability to control the amount of melanin and mucus they mix with seawater to create different forms of ink for defense. Their ink sak produces the melanin-rich ink and the tube that sticks out of the side of its head secretes mucus! 
 💦☁️ A higher ratio of water to ink, creates a widespread, thin cloud that obscures vision like a fog machine. 

🫥 A thicker, more concentrated blob that resembles the shape of the octopus is a pseudomorph

🌱 A long, thin trails of ink that can mimic other sea creatures or simply create confusion are called ink ropes
