@ben_yanes: By no means do I think that doing regular cable crunches is “bad” or a “waste of time”. But, when training the abs, it makes more sense to me to stabilize the lower body so that you can just isolate for and be more precise about targeting the abs. When using a lat pulldown, the pad serves as an anchor off of which you can create spinal flexion (bending). Instead of your entire body getting pulled up and off the floor, you can just focus on the crunching motion instead. You can also train the obliques with a side crunch variation under the pad, too.
