The videos we posted last week raised a LOT of questions… 🦒 So yes, the long awaited behind-the-scenes giraffe video is finally here. We never realised how much chaos goes into a giraffe check-up until this iconic (and slippery) day. Rangers falling, vets almost getting kicked in the face, our Founder fully in the action… conservation is never boring. 🐾 Mum had been limping for about 3 weeks and wasn’t responding to antibiotics, which was our cue to intervene. But getting her safely down is one of the hardest parts of the job. The helicopter allows the vet team to safely dart from above and guide her away from dense bush so we don’t lose her and she doesn't injure herself further. 🩺 We used a small darting dose combined with the efforts of our now internet-famous “giraffe boys” (our conservation rangers), whose job was to slow her down and reduce the risk of injury as the sedation took effect. Many of you compared this to the AT-AT walkers in Star Wars. We can neither confirm nor deny that the giraffe boys have accepted this as their official job description. 👀 ❤️‍🩹 The culprit? A piece of metal wire lodged in her hoof, causing infection and inflammation. After X-rays, the vets determined that removing the metal would require surgery that isn’t necessary right now. The real threat was the infection, so the team cleaned out the wound, treated it with antibiotics, and administered pain relief. ⭐️ The best news? Mum has already reduced limping! And for baby, whenever a calf is involved, we always keep eyes on them throughout the procedure. Most don’t run off, they usually stay nearby and watch the drama unfold from a safe distance. After what looked like a very dramatic helicopter chase, baby calmly waited for mum to get back up. Both are being monitored, doing great, and are safe on a private game farm! Huge thank you to our incredible rangers and capture team: SRB Wildlife, vets: Dr. Ryan van Deventer & Dr. Fecchio, and Rick Vaca for capturing it all. And thank YOU for caring this much about a giraffe’s medical records. ❤️ Long live the giraffe boys. 🦒 💬 Want to slip on wet grass while chasing a giraffe that’s actively trying to avoid the help you’re offering? You too can join us. Comment “WILDE” and we’ll send you all the details! #wildlifeconservation #fyp #wildlifeveterinary #wildlifevet #giraffes
