I learned to cornrow my own hair when I was a little girl, and by middle school, I was winning “Best Hairstyles” because I always did my own hair. So I really enjoyed doing Gabriel’s hair. But over time, his texture changed, and it got more complicated. Today, I just couldn’t deal with it—I was already stressed—so I cut it. It’s been hard for months to do his hair, but now… I look at him and see a different kid. And I keep asking myself—did I make the wrong decision? I also struggle with the way people kept calling him a girl. It made me so angry. Even the hospital gave him a birth certificate that said he’s a girl. A prophet once told me I was having a girl when I was pregnant, and I’ve never understood that. I don’t wish that confusion on my child—I rebuke it—but it’s so frustrating to love someone so deeply and still have to make decisions you *never* wanted to make. If it were up to me, I would’ve never cut his hair until *he* decided he wanted to. Wah, today located me. (Yes I gave him scissors cause I know he’s not gonna harm himself) But for real I’m not okay.
