@awesomeframers: May 2006 I framed a freestanding stair.  The method was taught to me over the @jlconline forums by a framer in Texas named John Kirkpatrick.  They did this a lot.  Basically you build the risers as walls, laminate the sides with layers of 1/4" ply "painted with glue" and stapled.  Cut the legs out after its set up.  It had very little bounce.  It was wild how stiff it was. . July 2010 I got to do another and this one got hardwood treads and turned out beautifully.   .
