This Psalm, known for its line, “He that dwells in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty,” was historically recited to drive off evil spirits and inscribed onto protective amulets. Our modern version of Psalm 91 differs slightly from the version in Jesus' day. Early Christians used the Septuagint, a Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible, which interpreted certain terms as references to demonic forces. For example, what we read as "pestilence and destruction" could also be translated as “evil spirit” and “demon.” When Satan tempted Jesus, he quoted Psalm 91: “He will command his angels concerning you,” and “On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.” Jesus responded with Deuteronomy 6:16, emphasizing not to test God. First to fourth-century Christians would have known that Satan was quoting from a prayer meant to disempower him, making Satan appear foolish rather than formidable.
