@mbari_news: Say hello to our friend Eryoneicus, a deep-sea lobster larva. 🦞 This adorable baby was spotted 1,196 meters (3,923 feet) deep in Monterey Bay. Scientists originally called them Eryoneicus, thinking they were a new species, before realizing they were the larval form of deep-sea lobster-like crustaceans in the family Polychelidae. Senior Research Technician in the Video Lab Kristine Walz spent time taking care of Eryoneicus at MBARI. “Years ago, I collected a few of these larvae and cared for them for many months in our seawater lab here at the institute. They are always a favorite of mine when I discover them on a dive video while annotating. They are some of the largest larvae in the deep sea and very long-lived before they settle to the seafloor as adults, living in muddy burrows,” she said. #internationaldayofbiodiverity #MBARIFromTheVault #Eryoneicus #deepsea #deepocean #ocean #marinebiology #deepsealobster #fypage
