@magni.fy: The Reason New York Became the Biggest American City #funfacts #historytok #nyc #maps #geography In the late 1700s, New York City faced intense competition from the ports of Philadelphia, Boston, and Charleston. Each city had its unique advantages and was a formidable contender for becoming the primary economic powerhouse of the fledgling United States. Despite these advantages, none of these cities experienced the transformative boost that New York City did with the construction of the Erie Canal. Completed in 1825, the canal linked the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes via the Hudson River, dramatically increasing the flow of goods and people into New York.
I grew up near the Erie Canal. We were taught how important it was to us. But I don’t think the rest of the country really understands its impact.

Nothing like that gets built anymore because politicians wouldn't see the benefit until after their political term was over.
If they tried the next politician to come along would probably cancel it.

There is still part of the Erie Canal where I live. There are a bunch of old locks everywhere that are overgrown with trees and such because the city just forgot about them I guess.

I’m from Philly it’s always crazy to think how important our city once was. At least we’re still the second largest city on the east coast
