@themediterraneangardener: Hedge pruning Now is the perfect time to maintenance prune your hedges for the first time this year You want to do this in late spring or early summer but you always need to check for any nesting birds first. If you see any birds this should be postponed as knowingly pruning when nesting birds are present would be breaking the law under the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981. Before you start you often see people sweeping down which has a higher chance of causing yourself a mischief, you want to sweep up which will also help you to get the right shape. You always want the top to be slightly narrower than the bottom. With a perfect rectangle or even worse the top being wider the top is going to get all the sun and it won’t be able to reach all the way down which will give you a scraggly bottom. #gardening #garden

You’re not supposed to trim hedges in spring because of nesting birds.

I have been cutting hedges for years, and years and years. Go up and down if you want to straight to the top. Not thinning the top looks naff.

Looks like privet, I’d trim it at the end of autumn or winter and enjoy the flowers, berries as well as the wildlife they attract. Who wants a ticky tacky hedge with a ticky tacky house? Not me 😃
