Vietnamese has this hierarchy of respect. And they automatically get higher respect as you get older with age. So the youth has the least respect from the elders

It isn’t weird. You can’t direct translate word by word from one language to another. In the situation that you described, the correct translation should be let the kid eat instead of let it eat.

I think of “nó” as something that is inferior than you and because Vietnamese language emphasizes on seniority/superiority, “nó” doesn’t necessarily means “it” but more like “something beneath than you in social rankings”

The reason for that is just the same as slag for us. It’s the improper way of talking/ like everyday street talk versus proper English.

Nó, in Vietnamese, refers to people/animal/object. If uses for people, it would be referring to those younger, not older.

English and Vietnamese are not translated the same, sometimes translated opposite. The word YOU or CARRY in Vietnamese can be translated to too many different ways.

My nephew was telling on his mom to grandma and he called her “Nó” and me and my mom rofl!! Bc first it’s a rude way to refer to your mom as nó and two it just showed how angry he was 😆

Language differences are interesting. In Lao I talk in third person by saying my name and English speakers think it's weird. "It" is used in Lao and Thai and I don't like it for any living being 🤷

On the other hand, I think English is funny to have the word it referring to anything but a person, but that is linguistic. We just have to accept the different.

It is a casual derogatory term. Only to be used to refer to those less than you. Never to be use in a respectful manner. You can use “no” to refer to your spouse, friends and kids. Not toward elder.

If the word it says to children, it is normal for adults to talk to children, but if it is said to people of the same age sometimes it shows disrespect, but friends with each other is no problem
