One thing I recently learned as a vet tech is to offer food or water after giving a pill to prevent it from hurting their stomach or esophagus!

Sounds like he needs a FHO or femoral head ostectomy- where there remove the top portion of his femor or the “ ball of his ball and socket joint” and the muscles take over as the joint.
