Visualizing Superheat and Subcooling. Air flow first! Target SH & SC depend on the metering device and manufacture. Target subcooling is how much subooled liquid we want stacked in the condensor. Actual or measured subcooling is how much subcooled liquid we have stacked in the condenser. Target superheat is how much superheated vapor we want in the evaporator. Actual or measured superheat is how much superheat we do have in the evaporator. Since we can't measure the saturation amount we can only measure the superheated vapor on the inside to know how much liquid is in it. Superheat and Subcooling match the target = balanced charge Low subcooled liquid mean not enough liquid in the condesor, starved condesor. High subcooled liquid in the condensor = flooded condensor. High superheat = too much vapor, starved of liquid Low superheated vapor = not enough vapor flooded with liquid. High SH + Low SC Starved EVAP, starved cond. Low on charge find the leak. High SH + High SC Starved EVAP, flooded condensor. Restriction or non condesnsables Low SH + Low SC Flooded EVAP, starved cond. Metering device issuez missing oversized fixed orifice, TXV sensing bulb not properly mounted, out of adjustment, stuck open. Low SH high SC Flooded EVAP, flooded cond.
