@art.history.rambles: This is ‘Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan’ (1883-85) by Ilya Repin. It depicts Russia’s first tsar, moments after murdering his own son. Supposedly, Ivan was consumed with anger during an argument and hit him over the head. Here, Ivan looks up in a state of anguish, remorse, and guilt at what he has done. He covers his son’s wound with his hand and cradles him in his arms as he slowly bleeds to death. This painting has been the subject of intense scrutiny and attacks by Russian nationalists. It was last attacked in 2018 by a man with a metal pole who claimed he was “overwhelmed by something”. 📍Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, Russia. #art #arttok #foryou #painting #arthistory #sad
