vinegaroon! also works great on leather! just be sure to rinse in a baking soda water solution to neutralize the acid

The tannic acid in woods reacts with the iron acetate (steel wool dissolved in vinegar) to produce a black stain. Oak and chestnut contain a lot of tannic acid so are darker.
