Structural realities of how Claude works that every serious user needs to understand before they build anything important on top of it. 1 :Claude cannot remember you between conversations Every time you start a new conversation Claude starts from zero. It does not know your name. It does not know your business. It does not know what you discussed yesterday. Projects help. Custom instructions help. But the underlying reality is that Claude has no persistent memory across conversations by default. If you have not set up a Project with your context you are re-explaining yourself every single time. The fix is not a better prompt. The fix is setting up Claude Projects correctly so your context loads automatically. 2 :Claude cannot access the internet in real time Unless you have web search enabled Claude cannot tell you what happened today. It cannot check current prices. It cannot verify whether a company still exists. It cannot look up a person’s current role or contact information. Its knowledge has a cutoff. Everything after that cutoff is a guess dressed up as a confident answer. The fix: always enable web search for anything time-sensitive. And always ask Claude to flag when it is working from potentially outdated information. 3 :Claude cannot tell you when it is guessing This is the dangerous one. Claude sounds equally confident whether it knows something cold or is generating a plausible-sounding answer based on pattern matching. The tone does not change. The certainty does not change. There is no verbal signal that tells you the ground underneath an answer is thin. You cannot tell the difference just by reading the response. The fix: the Confidence Audit prompt. Force Claude to separate what it knows from what it is inferring before it answers anything important. 4 :Claude cannot take action in the world without tools Claude can write the email. It cannot send it. Claude can draft the social post. It cannot publish it. Claude can build the plan. It cannot execute a single step of it. Claude is a thinking tool not an execution tool unless you connect it to tools that give it the ability to act. Claude Code, MCP servers, and integrations change this. But out of the box Claude is words on a screen. The fix: connect Claude to execution tools for the tasks where you need output not just output. 5 :Claude cannot replace your judgment Claude can give you 10 reasons why an idea is good. It can give you 10 reasons why the same idea is bad. It will sound equally intelligent and confident doing both. It does not have skin in the game. It does not know your full context. It does not understand the relationship dynamics, the market timing, the personal risk you are carrying. It can inform your judgment. It cannot replace it. The fix: use Claude to think harder not to think instead of you. Every important decision still goes through you. These are not reasons to stop using Claude. They are reasons to use it correctly. The people getting the most out of Claude are not the ones who believe it can do everything. They are the ones who know exactly what it cannot do and build their system around those edges. Save this.
