From more than 22,000 miles above Earth, our planet can look surprisingly small. Yet from this enormous distance, NASA's GOES weather satellites can continuously watch vast portions of Earth's surface, capturing full-disk views that reveal weather systems on a scale that's almost impossible to appreciate from the ground. Instead of seeing a single city or storm, these satellites give us a view of entire continents and oceans at once. Clouds stretch across thousands of kilometres. Hurricanes appear as enormous spiralling systems. Storm fronts sweep across countries, while developing weather patterns gradually take shape across the atmosphere. From space, phenomena that might seem isolated from the ground become part of one enormous, constantly changing picture. And these images aren't simply beautiful to look at. They're incredibly useful. GOES satellites provide meteorologists with near-real-time observations of cloud movement, atmospheric conditions, severe storms, hurricanes, wildfires, and other rapidly developing events. By continuously monitoring the same areas of Earth, they can help scientists track how weather systems evolve rather than relying on occasional snapshots. That constant perspective is what makes these satellites so valuable. A storm can strengthen. A hurricane can change direction. Wildfire smoke can spread across huge distances. Cloud formations can develop and disappear within hours. From the ground, it's almost impossible to understand the full scale of these events. From orbit, the bigger picture becomes visible. Perhaps that's the most fascinating thing about satellite imagery. It gives us a perspective that humans could never experience naturally. We can watch enormous weather systems move across the planet, see the atmosphere constantly changing, and observe Earth as one interconnected system rather than a collection of separate places. From more than 22,000 miles away, cities become tiny points, countries lose their borders, and enormous storms become patterns moving across a single blue planet. It's a reminder that Earth is constantly changing... And thanks to satellites watching from above, we can see it happen in almost real time. #nasa #space #earth #earthfromspace #spacethings
