@peoplesdaily: Bike sharing in #Beijing: A cheap and easy way to travel Bike sharing stands out as a mode of travel in Beijing as it remains affordable and convenient for people living in the city. #SharedBikes are almost in every corner of the street, and people can easily find a spot to park the bikes after a ride. To unlock or lock the bikes, people can just scan a QR code using a mobile app and for only 1.5 yuan (about $0.2), one can already bike around the city for 30 minutes. By contrast, there are far fewer shared bikes in New York and there are but designated places to lock or unlock a bike at a price dozens of times higher than Beijing. Several factors contribute to the low cost of Beijing’s #BikeSharing system. On one hand, China’s status as the world’s largest bicycle producer ensures low procurement costs. On the other, maintenance and redistribution expenses are also kept low. There are workers managing redistribution where the bikes are moved around the city using electric tricycles. Each worker can transport up to 20 bicycles at a time and get paid per bike — 1.5 yuan if the bike is used, and 0.8 yuan if it is not, which means a worker can earn about 20 yuan (about $3) for the 20 bikes moved. To put it into perspective, this worker from central China’s Henan said he can earn about $1,000 after one month of hard work.
