Ginkgo big or go home! The oldest species of trees still alive on the planet today, Ginkgo fossils date back to 290 million years ago, smack dab in the middle of the Permian period, meaning that these trees were around not only the entire time dinosaurs roamed, but that they managed to survive 3 of the big 5 mass extinction events that have taken place on this planet - a pretty incredible feat, if you ask me! This tree is a gymnosperm, evolving long before the time of flowering plants, or angiosperms, yet Ginkgos carry an uncommon trait of most gymnosperms in that they are deciduous, losing their really unique fan shaped leaves every fall. It's believed that Ginkgos first evolved in areas of disturbance, specifically alongside streams which at that point in time would've been dominated by massive ferns and mosses, and that's because they typically have what's called a 'bolting' development pattern where for the first 10 years they will grow straight up very quickly to get above any competition on the forest floor before growing out laterally. This would've allowed hem to grow and establish in a short amount of time, and from those riparian ecosystems they were able to spread out all over the world. If there's one tree that's been able to stand the test of time, it's these gorgeous adaptable beauties here! Ginkgos will find a way...
