It was a college graduation trip including myself, Adrian Sabga and Sean Mendon We had caught a few fish already that week but the weather was awful this day. Wind and rain all day! We had not seen a fish until about 230pm when this tank came in on the short teaser. Captain Tyler teased the fish in and I switched it over onto a mackerel rigged with circle hook. We had her on for about 30 mins when I put on a stand up harness…about five minutes into that the backing plate separated from the rod…I was left with the reel still connected to the harness and the rod traveling down the line toward the fish. We managed to hand line the fish on 50lb for 2 hours before getting her boat side. My buddy Sean Mendonca (former jr record holder for Atlantic blue marlin) wired the fish and the 18/0 eagle claw hook straightened and she swam off unharmed. We called the fish 550.
