Sally is still really green but I know this mare and I knew something was up. I was so laser focused on riding today since shes sat for almost two weeks though and wanting to reach our goals that I figured It was just her being ornery about working again and also being in heat. I should have listened to my gut as soon as I stepped on and could feel her telling me something was up because she is always trying to please me and it is not like her to give attitude over easy simple maneuvers like she was today. This is why I am such an advocate for listening to your horse and I feel like I need to take my own advice right now. Sometimes we ignore our gut (and them) because were so focused on our goals and are always hearing the rhetoric of how horses just want to get out of work, but horses brains literally do not work like that. If they are acting up there is almost always a reason. Sometimes they are confused, the rider isnt being clear, they are in pain, they havent been educated enough or prepared well enough for what you are asking, they are scared, or they are just simply having a bad day… just like us. Does that mean we just put them up and dont help them work through it? No… but it is our responsibility as trainers and riders to take a step back and try and figure out the why so that we can help them through it so they can help us reach our goals. If we expect them to adapt and learn our language, needs, and meet our expectations than we owe them that same respect right back. I wish more trainers would teach body language, herd mentality, and horse behaviors so that riders could be better equipped to understand them. Most people, like myself, have to actively seek this information out and sadly it isnt common available knowledge for the average or common horse lover/owner/rider.
