OHIO: Springfield Community mourn the death of 20yo Haitian student, who they believe took his own life after being fitted with ICE Ankle Monitor. Pierre Damas Bel, a 20-year-old from Haiti and Wright State University freshman was killed on Interstate 70 Monday morning after he walked into traffic. His family is alleging that he took his own life after ICE put an ankle monitor on him. Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers were called at 8:45 a.m. Aug. 31 to westbound I-70 near mile marker 66. Pierre Damas Bel stopped his Toyota on the right shoulder, got out, and entered the travel lanes traffic. A tractor-trailer tanker struck him,he died at the scene. The ICE gps monitor went on his leg in July, after Haiti’s temporary protected status ended. He was among many Haitian residents in Springfield detained or fitted with electronic monitors. An asylum claim he filed was still pending, with a hearing set for October. Bel had posted an Instagram carousel of awards, his diploma, his soccer team, his plan to study neuroscience, and the device on his ankle. He wrote that he came to the United States for school and was “carrying a feeling of shame and humiliation that I never imagined I would experience.” He asked how he was supposed to compete in college athletics wearing a GPS monitor. He played varsity soccer, belonged to the National Honor Society, and served in Marine Corps JROTC. Haitian community members and advocates have also expressed concerns about the severe psychological toll of deportation threats, with some saying Haitians have expressed thoughts of self-harm rather than return to Haiti.
