Solving an actual problem with 3D printing is incredibly satisfying. ••• I needed some spools for this string that arrived in the worst possible packaging for string- twisted and stuffed into individual bags *why* 🤬 Luckily it wasn’t much work to design a spool that I could 3D Print. But designing a spool, and optimizing the spool to be printed are completely different things. This presented a few options. ••• Instead of printing the part with supports- a little wasteful especially if I am going to print 20 of these- I decided to split the spool in CAD and print it with separate pieces. The first option was to attach the pieces together with additional screws. The second option was to use a c-clamp, or retaining ring to affix the top flange to the bottom. The third option, which is the one I decided to go with, was to 3D print threads on the parts and just screw the together.
