Number one rule in helicopter flying is to never lose visual reference. 90% of VFR pilots won’t experience this type of flying, but as a utility pilot and ferry pilot in Alaska this is not uncommon to encounter. So how do we stay safe in this situation? It starts by being prepared. Mike and I are flying two different aircraft and each carrying a ton of survival and camping gear. We have the gear and the mindset that will make the decision to “Land and Live” an easy one. We have redundant remote communications devices to gather up to date weather information and update flight plans. We also both have a vast amount of past experience and local knowledge to draw from. In this clip you can see and hear us each gathering information…assessing, reassessing and figuring out our options. I’ll share more from this flight soon and our whole trip from Alaska to Arizona. This is Class G airspace, clear of clouds. I share a lot of fun, pretty, and lighthearted videos here on social media and maybe sometimes make it look a little too easy and casual. It’s not. Most of my helicopter time has been working in very remote environments like this and very technical mission types. I love to share the joys of aviation, but even more I love to share the little tips, tricks and habits I’ve learned along the way that might help keep someone out of trouble. #FlyPretty out there 💃🚁
