This period was marked by extreme violence, forced labor, and the decimation of millions of Congolese lives, all for the economic gain of Belgium and Western markets. Even after the colonial period ended, the exploitation did not cease. Today, the DRC is a leading global supplier of cobalt, a critical mineral for lithium-ion batteries used in smartphones, electric vehicles, and renewable energy systems. Despite its resource wealth, much of the population lives in poverty due to systemic corruption, weak governance, and the continued extraction of resources by multinational corporations.
