@jacobtempler: The biggest brick building in Europe - Battersea Power Station - Read Below 👇🏽 🔋In 2022, a relic of London’s past was opened as a multi-use residential, commercial, and retail mega complex. Battersea Power Station. 🧱Started in 1929, the Power Station used to be the largest brick building in Europe, and at one point supplied one-fifth of London’s power supply - including that of the Houses of Parliament and Buckingham Palace. One of the designers, famous British architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, was responsible for the design of the red telephone booths that are now world famous. 🇬🇧The Power Station supplied power from the 1930s to the 1980s, before being decommissioned. In 1980, the Power Station was awarded Grade II listed status by Historic England, affording it protection for it’s unique position in British culture. In World War II, Royal Air Force pilots used the smoke plumes as a landmark… as did the Nazis, which explains why the Power Station was spared extensive bombing. The peak capacity of the Power Station was reached in 1955, twenty years after it became operational - up to 240 tonnes of coal arrived at the jetty per hour! 💷Today, you can visit the Power Station and explore some of its rich history. Designers of the mall within the main building did a nice job of maintaining the structural elements of the original building, including multiple examples of the original machinery. You’re able to ride to the top of one of the chimneys for about $25, known as Lift 109. Great place to have a walk around and lunch. Would you want to visit?
