Worms often receive all the attention as the major decomposers within compost. Don’t get me wrong: they’re fabulous, but it’s bacteria that do most of the heavy lifting, multiplying & eating of your waste.   I find the relationship between compost worms and bacteria fascinating. They work hand-in-hand & have a healthy codependency. Worms only have a rudimentary digestive system, so it’s actually bacteria that do most of the hard work, consuming & breaking down the organic matter before worms then finish off the process.   What happens is this: the microbes use enzymes to break down your scraps & turn them into a soupy slurry on all exposed surface areas. As the scraps decompose, more surface area is then exposed to bacteria, which results in their population booming. You now have many billions of tiny microbial mouths dining on your scraps. Worms then enter the party & start sucking up the bacteria-rich scrap slurry. Delicious!   In exchange for their services, worms create an aerobic environment rich with castings that allows the bacteria to thrive, & the nutrient-recycling loop continues.   Worms & hot compost 🪱🔥 People are often surprised to learn that hot compost will often have no worms, beetles or slaters present until the curing phase. These creatures can’t stand the heat, so they make a quick escape until the thermophilic microbes have done their thing & conditions have cooled. When worms start returning to your pile, there will be other microorganisms helping to cure it, too, such as fungi & protozoa. Hot compost that is ready to be applied to your garden will have less worm activity as finished compost has become stable, as most food sources have been consumed.   Worms & cold compost 🪱❄️ Worms may not be present in the early stages of a slow & cool compost pile because the population of mesophilic bacteria has not reached optimal levels. Be patient & as your scraps start decomposing worms will turn up to the feast. This is an edited extract from my book ‘The Compost Coach’. Preorder your own copy via the link in my profile.
