We used to look for a vertical log propped up. That would indicate previous visitors found a route down and propped a log for safety.

You seem to do alot in Utah. There's a tiny long canyon in Duchesne county, Strawberry pinnacles, timer canyon, gotta have eagle eyes, but red paintbrush petroglyphs galore. Stories can almost read.
